Troubleshooting Common HVAC Problems

The heat is on here in Jacksonville! Warm weather has arrived, and it’s not going to get any cooler from now until autumn creeps up on us. While summer’s full of fun times, it can also bring frustrations as the constant use of air conditioning highlights issues you didn’t realize existed.

Steps You Can Take to Troubleshoot HVAC Issues

Whether you’ve already uncovered troubles with your HVAC system, or you’re looking to get a jump on any issues that might creep up, take a look at these common symptoms that may lead to problems. Proper diagnosis and repair can help keep your system running smoothly.

Your air filter needs changing.

This is one piece of maintenance that you don’t need to wait for any signs of trouble to do. Your air filter helps pull allergens, dust, pet hair, and other airborne pollutants out of your home’s air. When it clogs, your system doesn’t work efficiently. This can impact your comfort, your energy bills, your home’s air quality, and the lifetime of your HVAC equipment. It’s best to change your filter every month or so for best results.

Your air conditioner is making strange noises.

Odd noises can be a sign of trouble within your system. The sound of a regular impact may mean an object is stuck in the blower blades. Turn off your unit and investigate, then remove any debris if need be. A screeching sound may indicate troubles with the blower assembly or the motor. The best way to take care of this issue would be to lubricate the parts.

Your air conditioner runs, but it isn’t cooling your home.

If you’ve noticed your air conditioner working hard to cool your home, but the temperature is still too high, there may be more than just one problem. Ensure that there is nothing obstructing your air vents. Check your unit for plants, outdoor furniture, or anything else near the unit that may hinder its function. Within the unit, you may then need to clean the condenser coil or fins.

When It’s Time to Call the Pros

Some HVAC issues go beyond what a homeowner can take care of themselves. Should you notice any of these maintenance problems, allow trained professionals to service the unit.

Faulty Wiring

Wiring problems should never be tackled by a homeowner. Dangerous electrical currents can cause damage to your system – or worse, bodily harm to you or a family member. Should you suspect wiring is the source of your air conditioning troubles, contact a professional immediately.

Low Refrigerant

Never try to add refrigerant to an air conditioning unit yourself. Low refrigerant can happen after a while, but it may also indicate a leak or a fault in the system. Just leave this one to the pros!

Nonfunctioning Air Conditioner

If your system has stopped working, there are a few basic checks you can take into your own hands. Ensure the batteries in the thermostat haven’t died. Replace them if they’ve run low. Then, make sure your thermostat is on the “cool” setting. Finally, inspect your circuit box for tripped breakers or blown fuses.

Should all your troubleshooting not restore proper function to your air conditioning, it’s time to call the professionals. Contact Snyder Heating & Air Conditioning for fast, courteous service done right the first time!
