Control Bathroom Humidity with Good Ventilation

Bathrooms are also called “water closets” with good reason. So many of a bathroom’s functions rely on water that it should be no surprise to discover high humidity levels in this small room. These humidity levels can pose a challenge for homeowners, as lingering moisture can damage fixtures, ruin paint, and encourage mold growth.

Humidity control is an important part of maintaining a safe, functional bathroom. Consider these simple yet vital methods to counteract the effects of high humidity in your washroom. These small steps can have a big impact!

How Humidity Happens

If you have ever needed to wipe away the fog from your mirror to finish a shave or found it difficult to dry off completely after a shower, you have encountered high bathroom humidity. Nearly everything you do in the bathroom releases moisture, from washing your hands in the sink to flushing the toilet. Over time, this moisture collects into condensation.

Condensation can linger on your wall covering, which will eventually ruin it if steps are not taken. It can also provide a hothouse for mold and mildew, which may have adverse effects on the health of those who live in the home.

Easy Humidity Control Measures

A little diligence will take you a long way in the fight against high bathroom humidity. While some measures require a small investment of time on a regular basis, others will last long after the initial implementation.

  • Ensure that your bathroom has sufficient ventilation, especially during showers or other surges in humidity. If your bathroom has a convenient window, and the outside temperature allows for it, open the window during showers or baths to allow steam to escape. Maintain your bathroom’s ventilation fan with frequent cleanings so it can operate at peak efficiency, and run it both during your shower and for half an hour afterward.
  • A dehumidifier can help remove moisture from your bathroom. Select one designed to work with the amount of space you need it for.
  • Take the time to wipe down surfaces in your bathroom after a shower, bath, or other activity. This prevents condensation from lingering on surfaces.
  • Use condensation-resistant paint in your bathroom. These paints are designed to help with humidity control and discourage condensation. Two coats will provide the best protection.
  • Seal your grout with a standard grout sealer to inhibit mold growth. This prevents moisture from becoming trapped. You can also utilize a small squeegee after showers or baths to remove standing water from the tile.

This was an exceptional experience! We woke up to our A/C on but not cooling (it was 6am and already 81 in the house). The person who set up our appointment was very nice, able to get us seen same-day, and let us know of some options to help save us money.

-Christy Cormier

From the get go I could tell that the Snyder employees were truly professionals and didn’t push to make sales like other companies I’ve talked to my whole life. They took the time to explain so that I could make a decision. The installers and later the duct cleaners were very respectful during their work here. Thank you.

Snyder provided an amazing experience from start to finish. Most of us dread getting estimates with pressuring salespeople. Erik was a great guy, explained all my options and didn’t try to pressure me to act quickly! Justin followed up with my husband and I to offer further assistance in our decision. Again, no pressure, just helped with our follow up questions.

-Michele Bauer
