4 Signs You Need a New HVAC

Even the most reliable of HVAC equipment will ultimately age and, due to regular wear and tear, the system will eventually need to be replaced. But how do you know when it’s time for a new HVAC system? Read on for the most common indicators that you need to know.

Age

The first factor to consider when determining the need for a new system is age. Due to regular wear over time, the components will be more susceptible to issues or breaking down completely. Once a system reaches or exceeds 10-12 years old, it is a good time to have professional evaluate the system, as there is a good chance that it will need to be replaced soon. Well-maintained units can run for much longer than that, but as a general rule of thumb, it is a great time to check in. There eventually comes a time when the cost of repairing a unit provides diminishing returns, in which case, it would cost you less in the long run to simply replace the whole system. A professional technician can help you determine whether you need a simple repair or adjustment, or if it’s time for a new unit.

Increased Repair Cost and Frequency

Most of the components of an HVAC system can be replaced individually. However, the simple fact is that the older a unit gets, the more frequent and expensive the repairs get. Parts like your compressor, motor, or coils fail. These parts are expensive to replace, not only because of the cost of labor, but the parts will have to be specific to your older system. This typically makes them harder to come by, which drives the price up higher. In some cases, your technician may not even be able to find replacement parts and may have to try aftermarket parts, which makes the repair that much more expensive.

Spiking Energy Bills

Are your energy bills increasing for seemingly no reason? It could be because it requires more power to do the same work. This is caused by worn, inefficient components, which means your HVAC system will take much longer (and work much harder) to reach the desired temperature. This effect only gets worse with age, leading to out of control energy costs.

Loud Noises

When you notice the following noises persist even after repairs, it may mean it’s time to replace the unit:

  • Blower hums loudly
  • Outdoor unit makes more noise
  • Furnace groans or bangs

Some noises can be fixed with a loose part but if the noises are ongoing, it is likely time to upgrade your system.

A new HVAC system may seem like a large upfront investment, but it will pay for itself in the long run. Learn more about the costs of a new installation here.
