Should I Be Concerned About Indoor Air Quality?

Posted by
Ed Miller on Thu, Nov 29, 2012

If you haven’t given much thought to the quality of the indoor air you and your family are breathing, then it’s time that you do. Although it may seem as if outdoor air is far more likely to be polluted by chemicals, allergens, debris, and other undesirable elements, it’s important to understand that nothing could be further from the truth.

Studies show that the air people breathe in their own home and office areas can actually be up to 2-5 times dirtier than outside air in major industrial areas. There isn’t just one issue responsible for these frightening statistics either, as the average home tends to have more than one issue. These commonly include:

    • Pollution via a variety of different sources within the home. These sources can include appliances, chemicals, cleaning products, moisture, allergens, bedding, pets, and pesticides to name just a few.
    • Poor ventilation that only exacerbates the problem by preventing adequate air flow to and from the outside.

How Can You Improve the Quality of the Air in Your Home?

Thankfully there are plenty of ways you can go about improving the

    • quality of the air
you, your family, and your guests are breathing once you’re aware of the problem. One of the most obvious and effective ways to do this is by becoming aware of the sources of the pollutants in your home and taking the steps to minimize them.
      • Have appliances such as furnaces, stoves, dryers, and others maintained by qualified technicians on a regular basis. Professionals will be able to adequately test whether or not emissions from these items are at safe levels or not. Proper appliance maintenance can help you save on energy costs as well.
      • Don’t keep household cleaners, varnishes, or paints around if you don’t need to. Definitely don’t keep them indoors where your family lives. Store in a shed or garage area instead.
    • It can also help immensely to open your home up to the fresh air outside whenever you can, as this can be a highly effective cure-all. Open the doors and windows when the weather is pleasant and enjoy the fresh air. Also be sure to make adequate use of any and all ventilation fans in your home, especially the kitchen and bathroom. They are there for a reason!

Ultimately making sure the air in your home remains safe and healthy to breathe is all about awareness and maintenance. Try it for yourself today!
