A Rainy Start to a Meaningful Night

There’s something about a Jacksonville evening at the ballpark that has its own kind of charm, even when the weather decides to make things difficult. Before the Jumbo Shrimp’s second-to-last game of the season against the Gwinnett Stripers, the sky opened up in that unmistakable Florida way: a heavy, relentless downpour that had everyone convinced the night was a lost cause.

But Jacksonville has a way of pushing through. When the rain finally let up, the crowd poured into the stadium all at once, a little chaotic, definitely soaked, but happy to settle back into that familiar rhythm of a night at the ballpark. Umbrellas got shaken out, seats got wiped down, and within a few minutes it was like the storm had never happened.

This particular night, though, felt a little different. It was the 25th anniversary of September 11, a day that always carries a quiet weight, the kind of day when moments of community feel a little more meaningful, and small acts of recognition land a little deeper.

As the field crew worked to get the diamond back in shape, an announcement rolled through the stadium. Snyderman stepped onto the field holding a check nearly as big as him, and the crowd erupted. Hoots and hollers filled the air; one man even shouted, “I love you, Snyderman!” Everyone in the stands knew the tradition: every Jumbo Shrimp home run means another $100 donated by Snyder, a small moment of excitement that builds all season long. Seeing that tradition add up to a $7,800 check for the Wounded Warrior Project on a night like this brought a wave of energy that felt bigger than baseball itself.

We joined Snyderman, Kevin Sosa from Wounded Warrior Project, and Jerry Altgilbers, president of Snyder, out on first base. A light sprinkle drifted across the stadium lights as the four of us stood together with that oversized check, up on the Jumbotron for everyone to see. Standing beside Kevin on 9/11 made the moment feel connected to something bigger than the game.

Snyderman Steals the Show

And while the night carried real significance, it also had the kind of joy Jacksonville is known for. Kids in their little Snyderman capes wove through the crowd, darting past rows of fans like flashes of color. And wherever Snyderman walked, the energy followed him. For a moment, the game wasn’t the center of attention. He was — high-fiving fans, posing for photos, and making sure every kid who wanted a cape got one.

A Night Jacksonville Won’t Forget

The night settled back into itself after that. The lights glowed against the last bit of drizzle. As the crowd eased back into their seats, the game went on, finding its rhythm again.

On a rain-soaked 9/11 evening, surrounded by a community that always shows up, it felt like exactly where we were meant to be — and it’s a good reminder of why Snyder keeps showing up for nights like this one, one home run at a time.
