The Road to Becoming an HVAC Technician

Ever wonder how someone becomes an HVAC technician? Before your service tech could start working as an HVAC tech, he or she had to meet education and technical training that prepared them to work in the heating and cooling industry.

Training to Be an HVAC Technician

It is possible to earn an associate’s degree at a local college or to attend a technical school to earn an HVAC certification. Depending on the training route chosen, it can take between six months to earn a HVAC technician certificate with a technical school and up to two years for a degree going the college route. Before starting an HVAC program, it’s a good idea to have taken courses in shop, math and physics in high school since most HVAC training will rely on this type of knowledge.

Students pursuing a career as an HVAC tech receive general training that covers repairing, installing and replacing HVAC systems. HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. There is a lot of information to learn before the student will receive their certification as a technician.

Depending on the type of work that an HVAC student intends to do, he or she may be required to take one or more licensing exams. In Florida, there are three types of state licensing exams available. Any technician that will be handing refrigerants, including CFCs and HCFCs is required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to become universally certified or certified in one or more areas, including:

  • Small appliances
  • Low-pressure systems
  • High-pressure systems

This testing can be done online at participating third-party testing facilities.

Special Skills a Technician Should Have

Being successful as an HVAC technician requires more than just training. A candidate should:

  • Have mechanical aptitude
  • Be physically able to lift and move large equipment
  • Have a detail-oriented personality
  • Be reliable
  • Be capable of explaining the intricacies of a customer’s HVAC system to the customer when needed
