Get Your Air Conditioner Ready For Summer

It might be hard to believe, but summer is almost here! Hot days full of sun and fun are just around the corner. While the weather in Jacksonville is gorgeous and perfect for heading outside, it feels like a real luxury to have a cool, air-conditioned house to retreat to after a day in the sunshine.

Now is the time to get your HVAC system ready for the warmest months of the year. You’ll want to ensure everything is ready to cool you down before summer’s change in temperature puts extra strain on your system. Get started on these summer air conditioning maintenance tips now so you don’t have to worry about it when you’d rather be out enjoying yourself!

  • Change your air filter

You probably did this before winter set in, and changed it once more in the middle of the colder months. (You did change the filter, didn’t you? Of course, you did!) With the swap over to air conditioning usage, it’s a fantastic time to get a fresh filter in your HVAC system. Ensure you’re using filters with the proper MERV rating!

  • Clear the area around your outside unit

You might already have headed into your yard to start spring planting or a little bit of weeding. Next time you take to the yard, clear the grass, clippings, leaves, and other debris from around the exterior unit. Debris can get into the system, or block airflow and cause the system undue stress. Remove shrubs and branches from the two feet around the unit

  • Make certain vents are unblocked and open

Take a walk through your home to check your vents and registers. Make sure they are all open, including in unused rooms, as that isn’t a good way to save on energy. Ensure no rugs or furniture are blocking your return vents. It wouldn’t hurt to give the vents a good wipe-down, either.

  • Set your thermostat for cooling success

Smart thermostats are a terrific way to cool your home down the right way while saving money! As the weather warms, you may want to adjust your thermostat settings to account for warmer temperatures, different bedtimes, and any trips you intend to take.

  • Set up a summer tune-up appointment for your HVAC system

Your air conditioner will have more to do, now that summer is here. Ensuring the system is in good, working order is an important way to both keep your home cool and prolong your air conditioner’s longevity. Have a professional check-up on your system to keep it in top shape for years to come!
