Go Green with Your HVAC Unit Today

Keeping your home comfy uses about half of all the energy on your electric bill. With greenhouse gases, climate change and the importance of recycling, the size of a person’s carbon footprint certainly makes a difference. So consider these tips and tricks to reduce your household’s carbon footprint, and even save you money!

Going Green With Your HVAC

Select a Unit with a High SEER Rating

As your HVAC system ages, it loses efficiency. Less efficiency requires more energy use for the same comfort level. If you’re purchasing a new unit in the near future, try to choose a unit with a high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating. Although the initial investment in a unit like this may be higher, the system will pay off over time.

Sun Rays

Use your windows to your advantage. Consider purchasing solar curtains to better maintain the heating and cooling of your home. When the sun shines, pull the curtains to the side and allow the natural warmth to enter. Even a few degrees of extra warmth make an enormous difference in your electric bill. On summer days, close the curtains to block the heat.

Update Your Thermostat

Programmable thermostats automatically turn down the temperature when you are at work. Set your thermostat for day and evening use. When reducing the night’s setting by just a few degrees, the savings are immediately felt in your wallet. And that keeps you on track for going green.

Proper Installation

You might be able to save some money by having a friend install your system. However, over the long run, you are doing yourself a disservice. HVACs are sensitive systems. Only when calibrated and properly installed will the unit function at full efficiency.

Air Filters

A clogged air filter is the number one reason HVAC units fail. And it takes only moments to do. Change your filter every month or two to keep your system efficient and running.

Maintenance

You probably are well aware of when your care needs its next tune up. Well, an HVAC system needs them regularly as well. Maintenance schedules keep your unit running smoothly and efficiently. It also foretells future problems, reducing or eliminating emergency repairs.

Seal Ducts

The whole point of the duct system is to move air. So when there are small cracks or holes, you lose up to 30 percent of the efficiency. Spend a few dollars maintaining seal ducts, and save a lot more on your electricity bill.

Check Home For Leaks

If heat is escaping out of the windows or by a door, you are paying a lot of money for nothing. Filling the small spaces will make your home more comfortable.
